Craig Gima (Jefferson Fellow 01, EWSem 08), co-leader of the EWCA Media Alumni Chapter, was named one of 2 national Members of the Year at the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) national convention on August 2010.
Craig is Assistant City Editor at the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. He co-won with Lisa Chun from San Jose, CA for their work in helping to free detained U.S. reporters Roxanna Saberi from Iran and Euna Lee and Lisa Ling from North Korea.
Craig met Roxanna Saberi at an AAJA convention in 1999, and helped coordinate AAJA’s efforts to get her released. Gima and Chung, a former San Jose Mercury News reporter, collected postcards for Ling and Lee at the 2009 AAJA Convention. The idea was to provide a way for individual convention-goers to write heartfelt messages welcoming them home, Chung said.
“I would want to know that my fellow journalists were thinking of me and trying to help me if I were ever in such a situation,” Chung said. Simple words such as “people are thinking of you, here in Boston,” could be helpful, she added.
