Founded in 1960, the East-West Center turns fifty in 2010 and we hope you will join us in celebrating this significant milestone in as many ways as you can!

Looking back, it took nearly a week for Shuichi Fujibayashi to travel from Yokohama to Honolulu on the S.S. President Cleveland in 1967!  On board he was excited to meet other EWC grantees — from Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Hong Kong, Macao, Singapore, Burma, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa and Guam.

Hula dancers met the ship at Aloha Tower and, draped with flower leis, the eager new arrivals headed for the campus where they joined still more Asians and Americans, both  teachers and students, all committed to learning in a true cross-cultural community.

Moving forward, some 500 students and hundreds more participants arrive by jet each year now.  Through research, education, exchanges, and training programs they continue to prepare themselves for leadership in a region that has changed more rapidly than any in history.

Wherever they come from and wherever they go, each year new students need your help to join you in a network of more than 55,000 alumni around the world dedicated to creating a more peaceful, prosperous and just Asia Pacific region.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

With your help, the East-West Center will continue to strengthen its partnerships and augment its programs to meet the increasing demands of the next 50 years. Your gift to the EWC makes meaningful programs and transformational experiences possible.

Because a U.S. Congressional appropriation covers most of the Center’s basic operating costs, your contribution goes directly to fund scholarships and other important programs that would not exist without private supportAll gifts, large or small, are important, but your participation in this, our 50th year, is most important of all!

Thanks to the generosity of alumni donors, the EWC Association Alumni Scholarship Fund has been able to distribute more than $150,000 so that 47 students from 16 countries could participate in EWC education programs.

You Can Contribute to the EWCA Scholarship Fund or Create Your Own Fund

Gifts of any size are welcome!  For commitments of $25,000 or more, the EWC can set up a separately managed fund.  Gifts of $50,000 or more qualify as Permanent Named Endowments.  No fees are charged so that all revenues go directly to benefit the student recipients.

Together, we continue to work toward the vision of a region where perspectives are global, leadership is regional, cooperation is natural and conflict is unthinkable.
